Education & Outreach

Education underpins and forms an integral part of Archaeology Scotland’s activities. Our aim is to encourage understanding of, and promote involvement in, Scotland's archaeological heritage for all ages and levels of interest. We do this through:

Advocacy- Archaeology Scotland supports the use of archaeology in both formal and informal education. As a member of the Heritage Education Forum (HEF) we promote heritage learning to support Curriculum for Excellence in schools. HEF comprises representatives from Scotland's national cultural organisations.

Outreach - The Education and Outreach team, comprised of staff and volunteers delivers practical workshops at public events such as science festivals and environmental fairs and runs a local programme of archaeology workshops in both mainstream and special education schools. We are supported in doing this by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, The Robertson Trust and a number of other supportive trusts.

Resources - Archaeology Scotland is always working to extend its range of interactive workshops and artefact investigation kits. We make these available to schools and community groups and as part of our Scotland-wide loans service. We also have online resources designed to support teachers.
