Schools' Resources

SAM for Schools! is an exciting celebration of archaeology in Scotland that takes place in September. Find out how your school can get involved by clicking on the link and download the SAM ideas guide to get you started.
Archaeology Scotland has a number of resources designed to support teachers. If you have any comments or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact the Education Officer, Meg Faragher
Workshops
Archaeology Scotland runs a Volunteer Outreach Project which brings free hands on archaeological workshops to local schools and community groups. We offer workshops based around a simulated excavation of artefacts from the Iron Age, Roman or Mediaeval periods, uncovering a Viking burial and a range of hands on activities exploring ancient technology and traditional skills.
Loans
Schools and other interested groups can borrow three Artefact Investigation Kits containing genuine artefacts and an information pack. The kits are based on three themes 'Fantastic Flint', 'Roman Scotland' and 'Iron Age Scotland'. We are currently developing a 'Viking Scotland Kit'.
Activity guides
The step-by-step guides below explain how to try some of the activities that archaeologists use when carrying out surveys on archaeological sites. The guides are easy to follow, require simple equipment, such as tracing paper and measuring tapes and combine elements of Literacy, Numeracy, Social studies and Expressive arts.
Taking photographs and making sketches
