Outreach

Community Archaeology in Uist Helen Bradley

Archaeology Scotland runs a range of initiatives which help people of all ages and abilities get involved in, and learn more about, Scottish archaeology.

Volunteer Outreach Project was launched in 2008. The project offers free interactive workshops to mainstream and special schools and community groups. At the moment this service is available in Midlothian but we hope to expand into other areas in the future. As part of this project, we train and support people who wish to become ‘archaeological demonstrators’. To apply to become a Volunteer or for more information about the Project contact the Outreach Officer, Ruth Bordoli.

Scottish Archaeology Month is a festival of free archaeological events which takes place every autumn throughout Scotland with lectures, exhibitions, excavation open-days and all sorts of hands-on archaeological activities. There is also a dedicated schools programme - SAM for Schools!

Adopt-a-Monument is a project which gives community groups around the country the training and advice they need to conserve, research and interpret local sites and monuments.

Archaeology Summer School is held in May each year in various regions throughout Scotland. It is a weekend of guided site visits, lectures and networking led by experts in the field. Advance notice and booking forms are sent out to members in January each year.

Young Archaeologists’ Club (Scottish Network) is a club for children aged 8 – 16 (and adult volunteers) with an interest in archaeology. If you would like more information about YAC contact the YAC (Scotland Officer), Rebecca Boyde.

Public Events; our Education and Outreach team deliver interactive, hands on workshops at public events such as science and history festivals and environmental fairs to promote archaeology to the public as fun for all ages.

Free handling kit loans

We provide a free loans service to schools and community groups in Scotland who wish to borrow our Artefact Investigation Kits. For full details see our Schools Resources page or contact the Education Officer, Meg Faragher.

There are many opportunities for volunteers at Archaeology Scotland. You can learn how to deliver archaeological outreach, organise a SAM event, become a YAC Leader or even help out in the office and meet the team.
